“Chico & Rita” A Movie By Mariscal…

Cuba, 1948. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey – in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero – brings heartache and torment. From Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, two passionate individuals battle impossible odds to unite in music and love.

Javier Mariscal, the man behind some of the most iconic designs and artwork of this generation, has turned his hand to movies!  The full length feature film “Chico & Rita” was premiered earlier this year and is the culmination of years animating and re-imagining New York and Cuba of the 1940’s and 50’s, through an artists eyes.   The tale of love, heartbreak and music is set against an intensely dramtic political backdrop that serves to create some of the most memorable animated scenes in recent times.

Whilst Mariscal may be better known for his work designing furniture for Nanimarquina, Moroso, Andreu World, Vondom and Magis, as well as his interior and graphic projects for Absolut, Camper, Barcelona City and Amnesty International – his first foray into feature film direction has won him high praise from around the world.

Impeccable work of art – TIMEOUT

One of the 10 best films of the year – BBC

The film is being released in different markets in stages, having premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in late 2010.   Also available to purchase is the accompanying graphic novel that captures the story through Mariscal’s unique and evocative drawings.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Mariscal will also launch a new chair on at Milan this April.  The 100% recycled and 100% recyclable chair sensibly named: GREEN will be manufactured by his fellow Spaniards Mobles 114.  For more on the chair…. click here.

Showtime (Act 2)…

SALONE INTERNAZIONALE DEL MOBILE 2011 draws nearer and each day we receive more and more tasters and teasers from the suppliers who will be using the fair to launch their latest and greatest designs and collaborations.

One of the most exciting meeting of minds is the announcement that the prolific Patricia Urquiola has designed a new chair collection for Andreu World of Spain.  Nub will be unveiled next week in Milan and the rest of the collection will be forthcoming over the next 12 months.  A quintessential Urquiola creation, the chair boasts a striking turned-timber frame that envelopes the sitter and yet its beauty allows it to stand alone when not in use.

LZF are once again upping the ante with the premiere of a film! The graphically rich, digitally animated short explores the wealth of inspiration found in nature, the birth of a concept and it’s growth into a tangible reality… the film only serves to reinforce the trademark artisanship of LZF Lamps.

Wine Time…

Photovoltaics, gravitational reliance and thermal inertia.

Not your standard wine making terminology, granted, but inspired techniques employed to great effect by Norman Foster in designing the groundbreaking Grupo Faustino owned Portia Wineries in Gumiel de Izán, Spain.

Its striking design is based on the three stages in winemaking: fermentation in stainless steel tanks, ageing in oak casks, and bottle ageing.  These stages determine the building’s three volumes and are controlled by the operations centre at the heart of the building… the materials used also relate to the materials inherent in producing wine: concrete, steel and glass.

Foster + Partners approach here was to completely review the winery (Bodega) as a building type. Their challenges in topography and housing the winemaking processes alongside offices, warehousing and a hospitality precinct were ingeniously embraced in the final outcome.  Working with the lay of the land,  grape truck delivery was consciously placed at higher levels to sorting and fermentation plants thereby employing gravity to assist in the movement of the product.  This ultimately minimised use of energy-consuming machinery and lessens  the need for earth levelling and a greater impression on the landscape,  and this is just one of the ingenious devices employed to reduce envornmental impacts.

Having previously collaborated with Frank Gehry on the Marques de Riscal Winery Hotel, Andreu World’s pieces are again prevalent in the internal furnishings of Portia Bodega.   The Lineal Collection, Mar Tables and extensive Nanda seating were selected by Foster + Partners to complement the materials used throughout the internal and courtyard spaces.

Grinning Winners: IDEA 2010…

Last Thursday saw the ninth IDEA Awards by the team at (inside) magazine, celebrated at The Ivy Room and The Ivy Lounge in Sydney.

As usual, the event was sold out and the spectacular after-party continued until the wee hours of Friday morning.  Without saying too much, we may or may not be aware of a number of bleary eyed revelers crawling into work late on Friday… no naming names!

Winners this year were a welcome mix of large International practices and emerging, smaller firms – a heartening indication that the Australian Interior Design Industry is very much alive and better still: thriving.  The fact that the shortlisted and winning projects ran the full gamut of budgets, scale and time-frames was proof more-so that the local talent pool is abundantly rich and fiercely creative in the face of the recent economic downturn.

Having had a hand in designing the venue for the awards night itself: The Ivy, Woods Baggot celebrated their win of the “overall best design” category for the breathtaking Hilton South Wharf in Melbourne’s docklands precinct.

Coupled with the integrated convention center, the project had already won them the category for Best Institutional Design, Best Hospitality Design as well as The National Award for Public Architecture at the recent Australian Institute of Architects Awards.  It seems Woods Baggot have demonstrated their international design prowess with every facet of this immense project.  Capitalising on the latest in local and imported designer fittings to furnish the world class facility, Woods Baggot specified striking Ferrari red Round Bar Stools from Christophe Pillet and EMU, Italy – A punchy addition to the public bar.  As well as this, restaurants were fitted out with the Carlotta Chair from Andreu World, combining luxurious upholstered seats with fine wicker weave back rests in a timber frame.  A study in pure refinement.

Luchetti Krelle were duly rewarded for their intensely productive two years since the firms inception.  Having picked up the Best Emerging Practice Award in 2009, Rachel and Stuart were back on the podium this year triumphantly but no less humbly collecting their People’s Choice Award for Designer of The Year…  not bad for a two year old!

Michael McCann and Dreamtime’s Victor Churchill Fine Family Butcher was unsurprisingly the big Retail Design winner this year.  The incomparable project was a sure-fire winner as one of the most amazing retail fit-outs Australia has ever seen with Italian Calacatta marble stone floor and Himlayan salt brick walls.

The Major Commercial Category was a win for HASSELL and their ANZ Centre in Melbourne.   The vast 84,450 sqm commercial complex was given life with stunning geometry, an uncluttered sense of space and a riot of colourful breakout areas infusing a sense of playfulness and intrigue.  Very much at home within this brief were the bd Love Bench and bd Love Lamps by Ross Lovegrove and Spain’s bd Ediciones.

All in all, the Awards were again a celebration of local talent and best practice.  We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Hot on the heels of the recent relaunch of The Argyle in Sydney’s historic “Rocks” precinct, comes the Bavarian Hospitality Group’s newest gastro offering: The Cut Bar & Grill.

Another expert interior from the masterminds at Luchetti Krelle plays backdrop to a bistro for beef lovers and meat cut connoisseurs. The heritage location’s heavy timber accents are harnessed and the mood is built upon with gorgeous upholstered Carola’s from Andreu World contributing to the character filled atmosphere.

James Privett, formerly of Bistro Moncur and Bennelong steers this venture with a deft touch, capitalizing on the current steak house trend and further establishing The Argyle as a culinary destination with the recent success of Sake Restaurant in the Good Food Guide Awards.  Good news too for our readers in ‘The Sunshine State’: Queensland, with Sake Restaurant Brisbane due to open this November at Eagle Street Pier!

Hats Off: Good Food Guide 2011 Winners…

…what a year!

Winners are grinners and we’d like to extend our congratulations to some of the biggest names in Sydney’s Culinary Community and acknowledge those new comers who have earned themselves a coveted “HAT” in the Herald’s annual dining review and awards.  Check out some pictures from the awards night here.

The team at the stunning Manly Pavilion, which opened to much acclaim in March of this year, have taken out the prize for Best New Restaurant in this years Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide Awards.  An unrivalled marriage of location, service, design and dining options saw the heritage waterfront venue draw the winning votes in a hotly contested category. Click here to watch the Herald’s interview with chefs James Parry and John Barthelmess.  The video beautifully captures the uninterrupted views across the water, complimented by the striking selection of Round, Ivy and Heaven pieces from Italy’s EMU collection and the attention to detail given to the unique project by Squillace Nicholas Architects.

Over in the CBD where the business lunch is king and the high-powered clientele: discerning, it is no surprise to us that the wonderful Martin Benn of Sepia took out the award for Emirates Chef of The Year.  KE-ZU had the pleasure of working with Martin, Vicki Wild and the team at SJB in furnishing the “…gentleman’s-club-meets-brasserie…” atmosphere of the Sussex Street eatery with beautiful wicker and leather detailed Manila Chairs from Spain’s Andreu World.

Heading down to The Rocks now, where the wildly successful Sake Restaurant and Bar, in the Argyle precinct has been awarded a SMH Chefs Hat in its first twelve months of operation – No small feat!  Luchetti Krelle crafted for the owners a space that brings toegther some of Australia’s most significant historical architecture with a contemporary Japanese setting populated with Smile stools and chairs from Andreu World and timber Mikado pendant lights from LZF.  A triumph in taste and style, which obviously met with the Sydney Morning Herald’s approval!

Perennial favourite, ARIA scored two hats again, we like to think the Noosa, Anna and Lucrecia chairs from Andreu World went some of the way to contributing to a faultless dining experience overlooking some of Sydney’s greatest landmarks.

Congratulations to all!  Talking about all these eateries is enough to make you hungry… see you at the bar!

Saturday Indesign 2010

As the dust settles on another Saturday Indesign, we all hurriedly flock back to the office and flick  through our photos and thumb through notes gathered over a frenetic two day gallop around inner Melbourne.

Networking, over working, over indulging… whatever your approach or game plan, it’s clear from doing the rounds that the Saturday Indesign format seems to go from strength to strength with each year.  Melbourne 2010 was a big undertaking, by those behind the scenes as well as those making the rounds… there was just so much to see.

The Project was again in full swing this year, teaming designers with suppliers, the collaborations complimented and elevated both the products and their showrooms.  Zenith and Woodhead are to be commended for their “Let It Be Seen” installation.  Launching the new “Be Chair” the Zenith and Woodhead team’s swept through the gleaming new showroom interpreting the Seven Deadly Sins in their product installations with a cascade of  B’s  in varied fonts and formats, tumbling through all three floors.  Celebrating the arrival of Enea’s new Lievore designed Lottus collection;  the range of stacking seats, armchairs and collection of stools were given a bold presence alongside the sleek OH! family of lounge chairs.

The students at RMIT Interior Design were called to action by Stylecraft who made the most of their Flinder’s Lane atrium by suspending a “…play on texture, form and movement” in the form of hand folded paper geometric clouds.

Schiavello, (ever the fashionistas) brought together a mixed bag of industries to spend the day with.  Renowned fashion designer Akira Isogawa, the architectural team at Lava and the textile colour master Giulio Ridolfo.  Diversity expressed through personalisation was the order of the day, reflecting the range and versatility of Schiavello’s workstations.

As any stylist or merchandiser will attest: displaying decorative lighting well, in a busy showroom environment can be very-very difficult and a thankless task.  Euroluce and Tim Fleming of Flatland OK, however, managed to light up Exhibition St with a refined, inspiring, crisp display. “Ordinary things, beautifully lit…”  set the scene for a showroom where the unique paper decorative elements effortlessly supported the true subject: Euroluce’s stunning FLOS collection and gave the reissued and newly coloured luminaires from Jielde, the space to really sing.

Heading out from the CBD and Flinders Lane Quarter took us to Richmond to see some old friends and their new products.  Living Edge threw the doors open on their gigantic Bridge Road showroom where they share space with Cadry’s.  Hosting the Launch Pad young designer exhibition on their upper floor, they brought together the next generation of young Australian design alongside historical heavyweights like Charles and Ray Eames, the notorious Established & Sons as well as the highly regarded Andreu World collections as well as some bold new Artifort pieces such as Swamp.  As the afternoon wore on and the Chandon took full effect the RS Barcelona Foosball Table really came into it’s own and won over a legion of new fans!

Eco Outdoor’s beautifully furnished Bollinger Bar was the cherry on the showroom cake as their vast space expertly brought the outdoors: in.  Full sized birch trees, fire pits and water features gave life to the furniture and fittings affording the Kenneth Cobonpue and Eco Outdoor collections the space to really be absorbed and celebrated.  Lighting too was expertly executed with Hive’s Biba, Little People and Molly suspension lights adding to the atmosphere in each installation.

All in all, a busy but beneficial two days.  As always, there is never enough time to tick everything off the list and the prospect of another day on foot would probably be crippling.  Ultimately the coming together of the design community in this fashion serves each sector well.  The opportunity to meet, mingle and share in this way is fundamental in building on the strength of the regions design foundations.  Tired as we are, we eagerly await the opportunity to see how 2011 in Sydney will advance us even further upon this years achievements.

Sitting Pretty In Spain…

One of the coolest websites around: COOL HUNTING recently featured an article on the “Spanish Seating Renaissance”. We were chuffed (but not surprised) to note that accounting for over half the examples of good Spanish seating design are KE-ZU products…  Sitting pretty indeed!
