Spain Invades Japan (For Design Week)…

In November the 2011 Tokyo Designer’s Week (TDW) saw Spanish brands curated en masse in an exhibition titled: SPAINALIGHT a celebration of ‘light and passion’ staged at the Spanish Embassy in Tokyo .

Spainalight’s mise-en-scene pays tribute to the warm, Mediterranean light which Spanish designers make full use of in their work – a charming, playful light conducive to creativity, which celebrates innovation and avant-garde experimentation.

Showcasing 116 pieces by 43 designers and 52 companies, the exhibition was very well recieved and highlighted the shared Spanish/Japanese ethos of innovation as a driving force in creative persuits.  Sancal, nanimarquina, Vondom, Andreu World, and Lzf Lamps (amongst others) celebrated the recent works of Patricia Urquiola, Bouroullec Studio, Mariscal and Jaime Hayon!

Recent disasters in Japan did little to dissuade participants and visitors to the annual fixture on the creative calendar.  German architect Florian Busch was engaged as creative director for 2011.  In the central exhbition centre not far from SPAINALIGHT the concept of exhibiting was given a fresh perspective:

By putting no restriction on the booth height and by arranging the booths in checkerboard street pattern, we have created a town-like exhibition space…

INSTALLED: Momofuku Seiobo, Sydney

There are only two Momofuku restaurants in the world, Momofuku Ko in New York and Sydney’s brand new Momofuku Seiobo opened this month as part of The Star.

Chef David Chang, a Korean American, was recently named one the top 100 people by TIME Magazine, GQ’s Man of The Year, one of the “21st Centuries Most Influential People” by Esquire – and for those lucky enough to secure a reservation at one of his famed eateries, that very much rings true!

With interiors by Sydney’s Luchetti Krelle the restaurant enjoys a relaxed, contemporary vibe with timbers and stone predominant throughout and minimal decoration, calming the senses… perhaps to better hone them on the food!

Andreu World’s new Moody Chairs by Lievore, Altherr and Molina have been used here for the first time in Australia, a wonderful launch project.  They are matched with Moody Stools by the same designers – an extension of the Woody family of chairs and stools.

Lighting too was from KE-ZU, with Eden Designs “On Linemagnetic track lighting used throughout the restaurant, a specification that allows Momofuku to customise and rearrange their lighting as they see fit, day in and day out.  The versatile system is used to great effect!

3 Of The Best…

Andreu World continues to win praise right around the world with its 2011 collections.

At the recent NeoCon 2011 Awards in Chicago the Sail, Sit and Nub collections were awarded top of their catagories for contract furnishings – completely scooping the pool!

It was no surprise to us that Patricia Urquiola’s Nub collection took home the People’s Choice Award.

The Gold Award for Best Stacking Chair was given to Sail, the sleek stackable injection molded piece from Piergiorgio & Michele Cazzaniga.

Best Guest Chair Gold Award was won by Lievore, Altherr & Molina’s Sit Collection.  A charming, versatile family of chairs offered in timber, upholstered or myriad colour options in polyprop with sled or four legs.

Be sure to catch the Australian launch of Nub, Sit and Sail at KE-ZU’s showroom during this years Saturday Indesign in August.

See them for yourself and you too will be won over!

“Chico & Rita” A Movie By Mariscal…

Cuba, 1948. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey – in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero – brings heartache and torment. From Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, two passionate individuals battle impossible odds to unite in music and love.

Javier Mariscal, the man behind some of the most iconic designs and artwork of this generation, has turned his hand to movies!  The full length feature film “Chico & Rita” was premiered earlier this year and is the culmination of years animating and re-imagining New York and Cuba of the 1940’s and 50’s, through an artists eyes.   The tale of love, heartbreak and music is set against an intensely dramtic political backdrop that serves to create some of the most memorable animated scenes in recent times.

Whilst Mariscal may be better known for his work designing furniture for Nanimarquina, Moroso, Andreu World, Vondom and Magis, as well as his interior and graphic projects for Absolut, Camper, Barcelona City and Amnesty International – his first foray into feature film direction has won him high praise from around the world.

Impeccable work of art – TIMEOUT

One of the 10 best films of the year – BBC

The film is being released in different markets in stages, having premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in late 2010.   Also available to purchase is the accompanying graphic novel that captures the story through Mariscal’s unique and evocative drawings.

Not one to rest on his laurels, Mariscal will also launch a new chair on at Milan this April.  The 100% recycled and 100% recyclable chair sensibly named: GREEN will be manufactured by his fellow Spaniards Mobles 114.  For more on the chair…. click here.

Showtime (Act 2)…

SALONE INTERNAZIONALE DEL MOBILE 2011 draws nearer and each day we receive more and more tasters and teasers from the suppliers who will be using the fair to launch their latest and greatest designs and collaborations.

One of the most exciting meeting of minds is the announcement that the prolific Patricia Urquiola has designed a new chair collection for Andreu World of Spain.  Nub will be unveiled next week in Milan and the rest of the collection will be forthcoming over the next 12 months.  A quintessential Urquiola creation, the chair boasts a striking turned-timber frame that envelopes the sitter and yet its beauty allows it to stand alone when not in use.

LZF are once again upping the ante with the premiere of a film! The graphically rich, digitally animated short explores the wealth of inspiration found in nature, the birth of a concept and it’s growth into a tangible reality… the film only serves to reinforce the trademark artisanship of LZF Lamps.
